Which is generally considered more prestigious: Northeastern or Rutgers?

I’m trying to compare these two schools from a reputation standpoint, not just location or campus vibe. I keep seeing people rank them differently, and I’m not sure how much of that comes from prestige versus personal opinion.

I’m mainly looking for a general sense of which name tends to carry more weight when people talk about college reputation.

Northeastern is usually seen as having more prestige in the current national conversation, especially among applicants, employers familiar with its co-op model, and people comparing selective private universities. Rutgers still has a very strong reputation, but it is more often framed as a major public research university with broad reach rather than as a prestige-driven brand. In day-to-day perception, Northeastern’s name tends to carry more weight for selectivity and career-oriented reputation, while Rutgers carries weight for scale, research, and public flagship status.

One reason is admissions perception. Northeastern has spent years building an image of being highly selective and professionally connected, and that has shaped how people talk about it. Even people who debate whether it is "overhyped" usually still treat it as a school with strong national cachet.

Another difference is the kind of reputation each school has. Rutgers is widely respected, especially in the Northeast, for academics, research, and as New Jersey’s flagship public university. That is a substantial form of reputation, but it is not always the same thing as the narrower social idea of prestige that students often mean in these comparisons.

The name-recognition pattern is different too. Northeastern has become very visible nationally because of co-op, Boston, and its rise in applicant interest. Rutgers is extremely well known, but often in a more regional and institutional way: people know it as a large, established public university, which can sound less elite even when the academics are excellent.

So if the question is specifically which one people more often describe as prestigious, the edge usually goes to Northeastern. If the question were about overall academic respect or research stature, Rutgers would be much closer and in some circles could even come out ahead.
