Is University of Washington or Texas A&M better for computer science?

I’m trying to choose between these two schools and I’m mainly interested in computer science. I know both are respected, but I’m not sure how they compare in terms of overall CS strength, opportunities, and reputation.

I want to understand which one is generally considered the better choice for a CS major.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: University of Washington tends to have the stronger national reputation and deeper tech-industry access for computer science, while Texas A&M offers a very solid CS education in a larger engineering environment that can feel more broad-based and often more traditional. For CS specifically, UW is especially helped by its location in Seattle, where students are close to major employers, startup activity, and a dense recruiting network. That proximity matters a lot for internships, research connections, and industry-facing projects.

In overall CS strength, UW is usually viewed as the more prominent name. Its Paul G. Allen School is widely respected, and the school has a strong research profile across areas like AI, systems, human-computer interaction, and data science.

Texas A&M is still a strong option, especially if you value being part of a large, well-resourced engineering university with a big alumni network and a lot of school spirit. Its computer science program is respected, and A&M can open doors in software, engineering, and adjacent technical fields. The difference is that it usually does not carry quite the same level of CS-specific prestige or Seattle-centered recruiting advantage that UW has.

One thing to look at carefully is your actual path into the major. At both schools, computer science can be competitive, and that matters more than broad university reputation. If you already have direct admission or a clear route into CS at one school and not the other, that can outweigh a small prestige gap very quickly.

If both options give you comparable access to the CS major, University of Washington is typically the stronger choice for computer science. Texas A&M remains an excellent and credible option, but UW is more often the school people would point to first for CS strength, research visibility, and tech recruiting.
