Which is better for computer science: University of Washington or Santa Clara University?

I’m trying to compare University of Washington and Santa Clara University for computer science, and I keep seeing different opinions online. Both seem like strong options, but I’m not sure which one is generally considered better for CS overall.

I’m mainly trying to understand which school has the stronger computer science program and reputation.

For computer science overall, the University of Washington is more widely regarded as the stronger program and carries a bigger national reputation in CS. UW’s Paul G. Allen School is especially well known in areas like systems, AI, machine learning, HCI, and theory, and it benefits from a large research university environment in Seattle with deep ties to major tech employers. If the question is purely about program strength and reputation, UW has the clearer edge.

UW makes the most sense for a student who wants a high-powered CS environment with broad course depth, serious research activity, and a campus where computer science is one of the standout academic areas. It is the kind of place where you are surrounded by a large tech ecosystem, more faculty working across specialized subfields, and a stronger overall name recognition in CS circles. For students interested in graduate school, research labs, or being in a department with major visibility, that matters.

Santa Clara is still a credible option, but it appeals to a somewhat different student. It is better suited to someone who wants a smaller private-school setting, closer faculty interaction, and direct access to Silicon Valley companies in a more intimate campus environment. Its location can be excellent for internships, and some students prefer its scale and undergraduate focus, but in terms of pure CS prestige and academic depth, it is not usually placed on the same level as UW.

Santa Clara may feel more straightforward and personal. But if you are asking which school is more highly regarded for computer science itself, University of Washington is the stronger answer.
