University of Washington vs UC Berkeley for computer science: which is better overall?

UC Berkeley has the stronger overall name in computer science. Its EECS and CS programs carry exceptional national and industry prestige, and Berkeley tends to have broader recognition across top research labs, startup circles, and major tech employers. In practice, that usually means a slightly bigger reputation boost, especially if you are aiming for highly competitive roles, research, or graduate school.

One concrete difference is how each program is perceived academically. Berkeley is often treated as one of the flagship CS departments in the country, with especially strong visibility in artificial intelligence, systems, theory, and entrepreneurship. University of Washington is also outstanding, particularly in areas like machine learning, computer systems, and human-computer interaction, but Berkeley’s brand is usually the one that travels farther outside the West Coast and across more corners of tech.
