WashU or UCLA for business: which is better for undergrads looking for a business career?

I’m trying to decide between WashU and UCLA and keep going back and forth on business. I know both are strong schools overall, but I’m mostly thinking about undergrad business opportunities, recruiting, internships, and how well each school sets students up for a business career.

I’m not looking for a ranking in the abstract, just which one tends to be the better choice for a student who wants business.

For an undergraduate mainly focused on building a business career, WashU usually has the clearer edge. Its Olin Business School gives you a true undergraduate business environment from the start, with structured access to business courses, business-specific advising, and recruiting that is built around business students rather than around a large university population. That tends to matter if you want a straightforward path into finance, consulting, marketing, or similar fields.

One concrete difference is academic structure. At WashU, business is an established undergraduate home, so you can study accounting, finance, marketing, organization and strategy, and related areas in a way that is integrated into your four years. At UCLA, business options for undergraduates are more limited and indirect, since UCLA does not have the same kind of traditional undergrad business school experience; many students interested in business come through economics, business economics, or related majors instead.

Another key differentiator is access. WashU’s smaller scale often means easier relationship-building with professors, advisors, and career services, plus less competition for some business-focused clubs and leadership roles. At UCLA, there are excellent opportunities because of Los Angeles, strong student organizations, and a huge alumni base, but you are also competing with a much larger pool of ambitious students for the same internships, club positions, and recruiting attention.

Recruiting is the other major factor. WashU tends to provide a more intentionally business-oriented recruiting pipeline, especially for students who want a campus process that feels organized and supported. UCLA can absolutely lead to strong outcomes, especially for students who hustle and make full use of the LA location, but for a student asking which school more directly sets up undergrads for business, WashU is the more focused option.
