WashU vs Cornell for finance: which is better for recruiting and career outcomes?

I’m trying to decide between WashU and Cornell and I’m interested in finance. Both seem strong, but I keep seeing different opinions about which one has better recruiting, alumni connections, and overall placement into finance roles.

I want to understand which school tends to give students a better path into finance and why.

For finance, Cornell usually gives you the clearer edge in recruiting depth and brand reach. Recruiters know Cornell well, and in finance that recognition tends to matter most for the first job.

Cornell is the better environment for a student who wants the widest set of finance-specific on-campus opportunities and is ready for a more competitive pre-professional culture. That can help with internship access, but it also means you need to be proactive early.

WashU can still work very well for a student who wants finance without the same level of pressure or crowding. Its business school is well regarded, the career center is strong, and students often benefit from more individualized support and easier access to professors and leadership roles. For corporate finance, consulting-adjacent finance work, wealth management, and some banking outcomes, WashU can open solid doors, especially if you are a high-performing student who takes advantage of networking.

Where the difference shows up most is in scale and concentration. WashU placements happen, but they are less driven by a huge finance machine and more by students who deliberately build the path.

So the student who is set on competitive finance recruiting, wants a denser alumni presence in top firms, and is comfortable in a more intense recruiting culture will usually find Cornell more advantageous. The student who values a somewhat more balanced campus experience, smaller-feeling access, and a path that can still lead to finance with strong execution may prefer WashU.
