WashU or Georgetown for political science: which is the better choice for undergrads?

Georgetown is the stronger pick for political science at the undergraduate level. Its biggest advantage is location: being in Washington, DC gives students direct access to Capitol Hill, federal agencies, embassies, think tanks, NGOs, and policy research institutes during the school year, not just over the summer. For someone interested in politics, public policy, or a path toward law, that day-to-day proximity matters a lot.

The academic structure also tilts toward Georgetown. Political science there is deeply tied to government, international affairs, and public service, and the university’s School of Foreign Service and policy-oriented culture create a broader ecosystem around the major. Even if you are a standard political science major rather than in SFS, you benefit from the same guest speakers, policy events, internship pipelines, and faculty connections that come from being embedded in DC.

Outside the classroom, Georgetown has an edge because politics is woven into campus life in a way few schools can match. Student groups, campaign work, policy journals, speaker series, and semester-time internships are unusually accessible. That can make it easier to test whether you prefer electoral politics, public policy, advocacy, diplomacy, or pre-law before committing to one direction.

WashU is an excellent university and can absolutely prepare someone for law school or graduate study, but it does not offer the same immediate political network or volume of in-semester opportunities. Its political science program is respected, and some students may prefer the campus environment, advising style, or overall vibe there. But if the question is which school is better specifically for undergraduate political science with strong extracurricular and professional access, Georgetown has the clearer advantage.
