Is the University of Virginia or Boston College harder to get into?

I’m a high school junior trying to build a realistic college list, and these two schools keep coming up for me. They both seem selective, but I’m not sure how people usually compare them in terms of admissions difficulty.

I’m mostly trying to understand which one is generally considered harder to get into.

The University of Virginia is usually harder to get into than Boston College, especially for students applying from outside Virginia. UVA has a very strong in-state mandate as a public flagship, which means out-of-state applicants are competing for a more limited share of seats. It also draws a huge national applicant pool while still prioritizing Virginia residents.

That residency factor is the biggest differentiator. For a Virginia student, UVA is still very selective, but the admissions odds are more favorable than they are for out-of-state applicants. Boston College does not split its class by state residency in the same way, so its process is selective but more uniform across applicants geographically.

The academic profile and applicant behavior also push UVA into a tougher category overall. UVA is one of the most sought-after public universities in the country, and many applicants who treat Boston College as a reach or high target may view UVA, especially out of state, as even more of a reach. Its applicant pool tends to be especially deep in grades, rigor, and extracurricular achievement.

A practical way to think about it: if you are not a Virginia resident, UVA is usually the steeper admissions climb of the two. If you are a Virginia resident, the gap narrows, and in some cases the two can feel closer in selectivity depending on your profile, but UVA is still often perceived as at least slightly tougher overall.
