Is Stanford generally harder to get into than UVA?

I’m a high school senior comparing UVA and Stanford and trying to understand how their overall admission selectivity differs. I know both are highly competitive, but I’m not sure whether Stanford is generally considered harder to gain admission to than UVA.

The biggest practical difference is that Stanford is an extreme reach for virtually every applicant, while UVA, though highly selective, can be meaningfully more attainable for a Virginia resident with a strong academic record. Stanford draws an enormous international applicant pool and has exceptionally limited space. UVA gives substantial enrollment priority to in-state Virginians, so residency materially affects its admissions landscape.

For an out-of-state applicant, UVA is still very competitive and should not be treated as a safety simply because it is less selective overall than Stanford. Strong grades in demanding courses, sustained extracurricular involvement, and a compelling application matter at both institutions. Stanford’s applicant pool is especially saturated with students who have near-perfect academic credentials and unusually deep accomplishments, making outcomes highly unpredictable even for outstanding candidates.

Stanford is generally harder to get into than UVA. UVA may be the more realistic option, particularly for Virginia residents, but both schools belong on a balanced college list rather than being assumed admissions outcomes.
