Is Carnegie Mellon worth the cost compared with NYU for an undergraduate degree?

Carnegie Mellon is worth paying more than NYU only in some cases, not as a blanket rule. The biggest exception is if you are entering one of CMU’s standout undergraduate areas like computer science, engineering, or certain arts programs, where the school’s reputation, recruiting strength, and project-based training are unusually strong. Outside those lanes, the value gap is much smaller, and NYU is often comparable enough that a meaningful price difference should matter a lot.

One concrete differentiator is employer pull by major. CMU has especially strong placement pipelines in tech and engineering, and its undergraduate programs are known for rigorous, hands-on preparation that employers recognize quickly. For students targeting software, robotics, AI, electrical or mechanical engineering, or some specialized design and performance tracks, paying extra for CMU can make practical sense because the school’s name and training are tightly connected to those fields.

Another difference is academic structure and campus experience, which can affect how much value you actually get from the degree. CMU tends to offer a more traditional campus environment with a focused, intensive academic culture. NYU is more decentralized and embedded in New York City, which can be a major asset for industries like finance, media, entertainment, business, public policy, and some parts of the arts, where proximity to internships during the school year can carry real weight.

The last big factor is how much more “more” actually is. If CMU costs only modestly more and you are headed into one of its signature fields, the premium can be justified. If the gap is large, especially tens of thousands more overall, NYU is hard to dismiss because both schools are well regarded nationally, and avoiding extra debt usually matters more than a small prestige edge in majors where CMU is not clearly ahead.
