The biggest practical tradeoff is that Carnegie Mellon can provide unusually concentrated recruiting and technical training in fields such as computer science, engineering, robotics, and design, while Boston University offers a broader university experience with extensive access to internships, hospitals, media, finance, and other employers in Boston. Neither advantage automatically justifies heavy debt. The deciding factor should be your intended field, the exact net price after grants, and the amount you would personally need to borrow rather than the schools’ reputations alone.

For a student entering a high-demand, quantitatively focused CMU program and using its recruiting pipeline actively, a moderate additional cost can be easier to defend because the curriculum and employer connections are especially distinctive. That is less persuasive for a major where outcomes depend more on graduate school, portfolios, networking, or individual initiative. BU can be particularly valuable for students who will take advantage of Boston-based internships during the academic year, but its location is an opportunity, not a guarantee of a higher-paying outcome.

Compare each offer against the affordable alternative using a four-year total, including tuition increases, housing, travel, and any loans your family expects you to repay. Estimate monthly loan payments after graduation and ask whether they would still be manageable with a conservative first-job salary in your intended field. Avoid assuming that merit raises, outside scholarships, or unusually high starting salaries will close the gap.

If either choice requires debt that would constrain your housing, career flexibility, or graduate-school plans for years, the more affordable option is likely the wiser investment, even if it feels less prestigious.
