Is Carnegie Mellon worth choosing over Northwestern for computer science?

For a student who is confident that computer science will be the center of their college experience, Carnegie Mellon is worth choosing over Northwestern. Its School of Computer Science is unusually deep and specialized at the undergraduate level, with extensive course offerings and research across areas such as AI, robotics, systems, security, human-computer interaction, and computational biology.

At CMU, computer science is one of the institution’s defining academic priorities. Undergraduates can encounter peers, faculty, labs, student organizations, and recruiting activity heavily concentrated in technical fields from their first year. That density can make it easier to find collaborators for ambitious projects, research positions, and internships, especially for students drawn to highly technical or research-oriented work.

Northwestern offers excellent computer science, but its experience is more integrated with a broader private-university environment. Northwestern may be more appealing for someone who wants to pair CS with substantial study in fields such as journalism, economics, design, music, policy, or the humanities, or who places high value on a wider range of campus cultures and social experiences.

The main tradeoff is intensity. CMU’s CS culture can be demanding and may feel professionally focused, while Northwestern can offer more flexibility to explore without having the university’s identity revolve as strongly around computing. Choose CMU because you want the most immersive undergraduate CS environment, not because you assume Northwestern would limit a successful tech career; it would not.
