Is UCLA or UC San Diego better for internships?

UCLA usually has the edge for internships because of its location in Los Angeles, its larger alumni presence across entertainment, media, consulting, startups, and healthcare, and the sheer number of employers that recruit there during the school year. Being in LA makes part-time internships during fall, winter, and spring much more realistic, which matters a lot for undergrads who want experience before junior summer. UCLA also benefits from stronger name recognition in some connection-driven industries where networking plays a big role.

Location is the biggest separator. UCLA students can reach companies in West LA, Santa Monica, Century City, Beverly Hills, downtown, and the broader LA area without needing a full summer relocation. That is especially useful for fields like film, television, business, marketing, public policy, and certain nonprofit or healthcare roles, where in-person networking and school-year internships can lead to later offers.

UC San Diego still does very well, especially for STEM. Its proximity to biotech, life sciences, research institutes, and parts of the San Diego tech scene gives students strong access to science and engineering internships, and the campus has solid ties to labs and industry in those areas. If your interests are bioengineering, neuroscience, biotech, computer science, or research-heavy work, UCSD can be just as good and in some niches even more directly connected.

In terms of campus support, both schools have career centers, employer events, and alumni networks, but UCLA tends to feel broader across industries while UCSD feels more concentrated in STEM and research-oriented paths. So for overall undergraduate internship access across many fields, UCLA comes out ahead. For a student targeting biotech, research, or certain engineering tracks, UC San Diego can match it quite well.
