UCLA vs NYU for internships: which school has better internship access for students?

NYU has the edge for internship access, mainly because being embedded in New York makes in-semester internships much easier to do consistently. A lot of students can work part time during the academic year without needing to relocate, and that matters because many industries recruit through repeated semester-long experience, not just one summer internship.

At NYU, proximity is the differentiator. Students can often get to offices by subway, interview on short notice, and build relationships with employers while classes are in session. That creates more opportunities for coffee chats, networking events, and internships that start small and turn into longer-term roles. For industries centered in Manhattan, that day-to-day access is a real advantage rather than just a nice talking point.

UCLA is still excellent, but the internship pattern is a little different. Los Angeles offers strong access to entertainment, media, startups, health-related fields, and some tech, and UCLA’s reputation plus large alumni base absolutely helps. The challenge is that LA is more spread out, commuting can be a barrier, and many students rely more heavily on summer internships unless they are very intentional about scheduling and transportation.

Recruiting culture also differs. NYU tends to feel more tied into professional networking during the school year because so many employers are nearby and accustomed to hiring students part time. UCLA has major recruiting too, especially for West Coast industries, but the student experience is often less seamless for frequent in-person internship involvement during a regular quarter.
