Is Notre Dame worth the cost compared with Ohio State for an undergraduate degree?

Notre Dame can be worth the extra cost, but only when the added debt stays manageable and you would really use what Notre Dame offers. It has a distinctly more intimate undergraduate experience than Ohio State, with smaller classes, tighter alumni connections, and a campus culture that is unusually centered on undergrads rather than graduate programs. Ohio State is still a very strong university, and if the cost gap means major loans or real financial strain, Ohio State is often the smarter long-term choice.

Notre Dame tends to fit students who want a residential, close-knit campus where school identity is strong and undergraduate teaching gets a lot of attention. Its reputation is especially powerful in fields like finance, consulting, political science, and some humanities and social science pathways, and its alumni network is known for being very active and loyal. For a student who wants that kind of network-driven launch and values the campus culture itself, the premium can be meaningful.

Ohio State makes more sense for students who are cost-conscious, want broad academic options, or may benefit from the scale of a major public research university. It offers extensive majors, research opportunities, honors options, huge school spirit, and a large employer presence. In many fields, especially if you do well academically, build experience, and use internships strategically, Ohio State can lead to excellent outcomes without the same financial pressure.

The key question is not whether Notre Dame is more prestigious in the abstract. It is whether the difference in price would change your life after graduation. If choosing Notre Dame means modest extra cost that your family can absorb, I can see the argument. If it means substantial debt, less flexibility for grad school, or stress right after college, Ohio State is very likely the more practical investment.

For undergrad, reputation matters some, but what matters more is what you can do there without being financially boxed in. Between these two, I would pay more for Notre Dame only if the net price is reasonably close or if you are specifically drawn to its community, alumni network, and undergraduate-focused environment.
