Pepperdine or UC Davis for pre-vet: which is the better choice?

For a student seriously aiming for veterinary school, UC Davis is usually the more natural fit. It has a veterinary school on campus, strong animal science and biological science pathways, and far more built-in access to animal-related research, clinics, and faculty connections. If your priority is maximizing pre-vet opportunities in a place where that path is highly visible and well supported, Davis stands out.

UC Davis fits the student who wants to be surrounded by animal science from the start. You would be in a campus culture where pre-vet is common, and that matters because advising, coursework, research labs, and animal experience opportunities are easier to find when the field is already deeply woven into the university. Davis also benefits from its location and agricultural resources, which can make hands-on exposure with large animals, livestock, and veterinary research more accessible than at most schools.

Pepperdine makes more sense for a student who wants a smaller, more intimate undergraduate experience and is comfortable building the pre-vet path more independently. You can still complete vet school prerequisites there through majors like biology, and some students do well in that environment because classes may feel more personal and faculty interaction can be closer. But Pepperdine is not especially known for pre-vet infrastructure, so finding animal hours, specialized mentors, and research directly tied to veterinary medicine may take more outside effort.

If you are choosing based on which school is more likely to support the full pre-vet process, not just the academic basics, UC Davis has the clearer advantage. Pepperdine could work for someone who strongly prefers its campus culture, size, or setting and is proactive about seeking off-campus veterinary experience. But for most students whose main goal is vet school preparation, Davis offers the more direct runway.
