Is Cal Poly a better choice than Pepperdine for studying engineering?

For a student who knows they want engineering, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is the more compelling choice. Its College of Engineering offers a much broader set of dedicated engineering majors. Many undergraduate engineering programs hold ABET accreditation, and the curriculum is built around Cal Poly’s longstanding Learn by Doing model.

The biggest academic difference is depth and specialization. At Cal Poly, students enter a large engineering community with discipline-specific labs, upper-division design courses, faculty working within engineering departments, and a required senior project or capstone experience in many majors. That structure makes it easier to develop technical skills progressively and take courses closely aligned with a particular engineering field.

Hands-on opportunities are also a major Cal Poly advantage. Engineering students commonly work in laboratories, design teams, competitions, undergraduate research, internships, and employer-connected projects.

Pepperdine can be attractive for its smaller classes, Malibu setting, liberal-arts emphasis, and Christian campus culture. Its engineering options are more limited, however, so it is less suited to someone seeking the breadth of facilities, peer engineering culture, and specialized coursework available at Cal Poly.
