Which is better for undergraduate focus: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Dartmouth?

I’m trying to compare these two schools mainly from the perspective of undergrad experience, not grad programs or research reputation. I want to know which one is generally better if a student cares most about professors, class attention, and the overall focus on undergraduates.

I’m a high school junior looking at both and trying to understand which environment tends to feel more centered on undergrads.

Dartmouth is the clearer pick if your top priority is an undergraduate-centered experience. It is primarily focused on undergraduates, classes are typically smaller, and faculty attention is a much more central part of the school’s identity than at a large public research university like UIUC.

One major difference is scale. Dartmouth is a much smaller institution, so undergrads tend to have more direct contact with professors earlier and more consistently. At UIUC, there are many excellent professors, but the university’s size means large introductory courses, more layers of bureaucracy, and a greater chance that teaching assistants play a visible role in your first years.

Another differentiator is institutional focus. Dartmouth does have research and graduate education, but its reputation is closely tied to the residential undergraduate college experience. UIUC is an outstanding university, especially in fields like engineering and computer science, yet it operates much more like a major research flagship where graduate programs and large-scale research are a huge part of campus life.

The classroom environment also tends to feel different. Dartmouth is known for discussion-based courses, close advising, and a campus culture built heavily around the undergraduate community. UIUC can absolutely offer strong mentorship and serious academic opportunities, but students often need to be more proactive about seeking out smaller communities within a very large campus.

If the question is specifically which school feels more centered on undergrads in professors, class attention, and day-to-day academic experience, Dartmouth has the edge by a meaningful margin.
