Boston University or Michigan State for campus life: which has the stronger student social scene?

I'm trying to decide between Boston University and Michigan State, and campus life is a big factor for me. I want a place that feels active, social, and easy to meet people outside of class.

I know they have very different settings, so I'm mostly trying to understand which school tends to have the stronger overall student social scene.

Michigan State has the stronger overall student social scene. It has the classic Big Ten residential-campus setup, a much more centralized student community in East Lansing, and a social environment built around school spirit, campus traditions, sports, clubs, and weekend activity all in one place.

One big difference is physical layout. Michigan State feels like a true college town and a self-contained campus, so students naturally run into each other in residence halls, dining spaces, the student union, athletic events, and off-campus spots near campus. That makes casual socializing easier and gives the school a more unified student atmosphere.

Boston University is active, but its social life is shaped by being embedded in Boston rather than centered on one enclosed campus. BU stretches along Commonwealth Avenue, students are more spread out, and the city creates a more independent feel. There are plenty of clubs, restaurants, and things to do, but the social scene can feel less concentrated and less like everyone is participating in the same campus culture.

Another concrete difference is sports and shared energy. Michigan State has major school spirit tied to Big Ten athletics, and that often spills into tailgates, watch parties, traditions, and a stronger sense of collective identity. BU has school pride too, especially around hockey, but the scale and visibility of that shared social energy is usually lower.

Meeting people outside class is typically more automatic at Michigan State because more students live in a campus-oriented environment and spend their time in the same social orbit. At BU, students often build good friend groups, but it can take more intention because the environment is more urban and decentralized.
