What is campus life like at Boston University vs. Rice University?

I’m trying to get a feel for the day-to-day student experience at both schools, especially how social life and the overall campus vibe compare.

I’ve heard Boston University feels more urban and Rice is more residential, but I’m not sure what that actually means for students in terms of community, weekend life, and whether it feels easy to find your people.

Boston University and Rice can feel very different day to day. BU suits students who like being embedded in a city, with classes and student life spread along Commonwealth Avenue and the rest of Boston easily accessible by T, walking, and short rides. Rice fits students who want a tighter residential community, where campus itself is a major social hub and the residential college system shapes a lot of friendships, traditions, and weekend plans.

At BU, “urban” really means the city is part of your routine. You may go from class to a coffee shop off campus, use public transit regularly, and spend weekends exploring neighborhoods, restaurants, internships, concerts, or games around Boston. Social life is there, but it often takes more initiative because students are distributed across a long campus and many people build lives both on and off campus. For some students that feels exciting and independent; for others it can feel less instantly communal.

Rice tends to make it easier to feel anchored quickly. The residential colleges are not just dorms, they are built-in communities with their own traditions, events, and social identity, so students often find a smaller home within the university early on. Weekend life is more campus-centered than at BU, with college events, performances, club activities, and social gatherings keeping people around. Even though Houston is a major city, Rice often feels buffered from it in everyday student life.

For finding your people, Rice usually offers more structure upfront, while BU rewards students who are comfortable seeking out clubs, friend groups, and city-based opportunities.
