Is Boston University more prestigious than Michigan State University?

The biggest practical tradeoff here is national private-school brand versus large public flagship reputation. Boston University is more often viewed as the more prestigious name in broad national conversation, especially in fields like business, communications, international relations, and pre-professional urban career paths. Michigan State is still a well-respected major research university, but its reputation is usually framed more as a strong Big Ten public school than as a school people describe first in terms of prestige.

Outside of rankings, BU tends to carry more of the selective private-university image. Its location in Boston, strong visibility with employers on the East Coast, and association with a dense concentration of universities all contribute to how people talk about it. In the Midwest especially, MSU can have very strong name recognition and a lot of respect. But nationally, the tone is often more “excellent large public university” than “high-prestige private school.”
