Is Notre Dame worth it compared to UCLA for undergrad?

I’m trying to decide between Notre Dame and UCLA and keep going back and forth. Both seem like great schools, but I’m not sure how much the difference in campus culture, alumni network, and overall experience would matter in the long run.

I’m mainly trying to figure out whether Notre Dame is actually “worth it” over UCLA if both are affordable enough for my family.

Yes, Notre Dame can absolutely be worth it over UCLA, but mostly for a student who wants a more residential, tight-knit undergraduate experience with a very involved alumni network and a campus culture that feels cohesive day to day. Notre Dame is known for strong school spirit, a distinctive residential hall system, smaller-scale campus community, and alumni who often stay unusually engaged with students and recent grads. UCLA is a fantastic choice too, but it tends to suit students who want the energy, scale, and opportunities of a major public university in Los Angeles.

Notre Dame tends to make the most sense for someone who values community as a core part of college rather than just an extra. The campus culture is more unified, traditions are a bigger part of student life, and undergrads often get a lot of attention because the university is so centered on the undergraduate experience. If you want professors, administrators, alumni, and peers to feel accessible in a smaller-campus environment, that is where Notre Dame often stands out in a way that matters beyond graduation.

UCLA fits a student who is excited by breadth and independence. There are huge academic resources, strong departments across the board, easy access to internships and research in LA, and the social scene is broader and less centralized. Some students love that freedom and range. Others feel they have to work harder to carve out a close community, especially in such a large university setting.

On alumni network specifically, Notre Dame has a real edge in how personal and loyal it often feels. That matters most in fields where relationships, mentorship, and warm introductions can open doors. UCLA’s network is massive and powerful, especially in California and industries tied to entertainment, tech, media, health, and public service, but it can feel less intimate simply because of the school’s size.

If both are affordable, the decision is less about raw prestige and more about what kind of four years you want and what environment will help you thrive. Students who want a classic campus experience, strong traditions, and a deeply engaged alumni base often feel Notre Dame was worth choosing. Students who want a high-energy public university with exceptional reach, especially on the West Coast, often feel UCLA gave them more flexibility and opportunity.
