What is campus life like at Notre Dame compared with NYU?

I'm trying to figure out which school would feel like a better fit for me, and campus culture is a big part of that. I know Notre Dame and NYU have very different setups, so I'm curious how student life, social atmosphere, and the overall day-to-day experience compare.

I'm mostly interested in what it actually feels like to live and spend time as a student at each school.

They feel very different day to day. Notre Dame has a classic residential campus culture with a strong sense of school identity, lots of traditions, and a student experience that revolves heavily around dorm life, campus events, and football weekends. NYU feels much more urban and independent, with student life spread across New York City rather than centered on a contained campus, so your social world often depends more on the circles and routines you build yourself.

Notre Dame tends to fit students who want a close-knit environment where campus is the social hub. The residential hall system is a big part of that. Dorms are not just places to sleep; they host events, traditions, and communities that shape friendships and belonging. There is also a visible Catholic presence and a strong school-spirit culture, even for students who are not especially religious. A lot of students describe the atmosphere as spirited, structured, and community-oriented.

NYU tends to fit students who like autonomy, city energy, and a less centralized social scene. There are clubs, events, and campus spaces, but the experience is more decentralized because classes, housing, and hangouts are woven into Manhattan. Students often spend time in neighborhoods, cafes, internships, performances, or city events, so college life can feel less insulated and more adult. That can be exciting if you want variety and independence, but it can also mean you need to be more intentional about finding your people.

Socially, Notre Dame is often described as more cohesive and easier to plug into right away, since so much happens on campus and students share common traditions. NYU can feel more varied and diffuse. Some students love that freedom and the chance to shape a life that extends far beyond school spaces, while others find it less naturally communal.

If what you want is a campus that feels like its own world, with built-in rituals and a strong collective identity, Notre Dame will probably feel more immersive. If you want your college life to blend into a major city and you like the idea of creating your own version of community in a fast-moving environment, NYU offers that in a way very few schools do.
