What is the campus vibe at Notre Dame compared to Boston University?

I’m trying to get a feel for which school would be a better fit for me, but rankings and academics only tell part of the story.

I’m mainly curious about the day-to-day atmosphere on campus, like how social, spirited, and tight-knit the student body feels at Notre Dame versus BU.

The biggest day-to-day difference is that Notre Dame feels like a traditional residential campus with a strong shared identity, while Boston University feels more like being part of a city where campus life is spread out and students are somewhat more independent. At Notre Dame, dorm life matters a lot, school spirit is unusually visible, and football weekends really shape the social atmosphere even if you are not a huge sports person. At BU, the energy is more urban and decentralized, with students constantly moving between classes, internships, neighborhoods, and friend groups rather than rallying around one single campus culture.

Notre Dame is usually described as tighter-knit. The residential hall system is a big reason why, since dorms often become real communities with their own traditions, events, and social networks. Catholic identity is also part of the campus atmosphere, not necessarily in a way that defines every student’s experience, but it does contribute to the culture and sense of shared tradition.

BU tends to feel busier and more self-directed. Because it stretches along Commonwealth Avenue in the middle of Boston, it can feel less enclosed and less collectively spirited than Notre Dame. Students often love that freedom, but it can also mean you have to be more intentional about building community since the school does not create quite the same built-in togetherness.

Socially, Notre Dame often comes across as more campus-centered, spirited, and cohesive. BU is social too, but less in a single-community way and more through clubs, city outings, academic circles, and smaller networks. Some students find BU exciting because there is always something happening in Boston, while others feel it is easier to blend into the crowd.
