Is Vanderbilt or UChicago harder to get into for undergraduate admissions?

I’m trying to compare these two schools as part of my college list and keep seeing people describe both as very selective. Since I’m mainly looking for a general sense of how difficult each one is to get into, I want to understand how Vanderbilt and UChicago compare in admissions difficulty overall.

Both Vanderbilt and UChicago are extremely hard to get into, and in overall admissions difficulty they are in the same top tier. If you want a simple comparison, UChicago often has a reputation for being slightly more unpredictable because it attracts a very self-selecting applicant pool and puts unusual weight on academic/intellectual fit, while Vanderbilt can feel a bit more straightforward but is still exceptionally selective. In practice, neither is meaningfully “easy,” and a student competitive for one should treat the other as a reach too.

UChicago tends to suit applicants with a very clear academic identity. Its admissions culture is closely tied to intellectual curiosity, love of discussion, comfort with a rigorous core curriculum, and essays that show originality and depth. Students who thrive there often come across as deeply engaged with ideas for their own sake, not just high-achieving.

Vanderbilt is also highly selective, but the profile it attracts can be a little broader in style. Strong applicants there often combine top academics with high involvement, initiative, and a polished overall presentation, and the school appeals to students who want both serious academics and a more traditional campus energy. That can make it feel slightly less idiosyncratic than UChicago, even though the bar is still extremely high.

So if the question is purely admissions difficulty, I would not build a college list assuming one is safely easier than the other. The more useful distinction is that UChicago can be harder to predict because fit matters in a very specific way, while Vanderbilt may feel somewhat more legible but remains just as selective at a practical level.
