Boston College or NYU: which is better for city life?

I’m trying to decide between Boston College and NYU, and the city environment is a big part of it for me. I want a college experience that feels connected to a city, with things to do off campus and easy access to restaurants, events, and public transportation.

I know the two schools have very different campus settings, so I’m trying to understand which one feels more like a true city school in everyday life.

NYU is the better pick for city life. Its campus is woven directly into Manhattan around Washington Square Park, so daily life means walking out of class into restaurants, subway stations, shops, concerts, internships, and neighborhood activity right away. Boston College is in the Boston area, but its main campus in Chestnut Hill feels much more separate and traditionally residential.

At NYU, the city is effectively part of campus. There is no strong physical boundary between school and city, and students use New York the way students at other colleges use a student center or college town. If what you want is everyday immersion in urban energy, NYU delivers that much more consistently.

Boston College does give you access to a major city, but it does not feel like a true city school in the same way. The campus is self-contained, green, and quieter, and getting into the heart of Boston is more of a deliberate trip than a natural extension of walking outside. You can absolutely enjoy Boston’s restaurants, events, and transit, but BC students usually live more on campus first and in the city second.

Public transportation also points toward NYU for the experience you described. New York’s subway system is immediately integrated into student routines downtown, while BC relies more on the Green Line connection into Boston. That setup is useful, but it creates a little more distance between campus life and city life.

If your priority is a college experience that feels constantly plugged into urban activity, NYU matches that much more clearly. Boston College offers city access, but NYU feels like living in the city rather than living near it.
