Is Boston University or Notre Dame better for a finance major and career opportunities?

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my college list, and I keep seeing Boston University and Notre Dame come up as strong options. I’m mainly interested in finance and want to choose the school that would give me the better overall path for internships, recruiting, and jobs after graduation.

I know both schools have good reputations, but I’m not sure which one is generally considered stronger for finance.

Notre Dame has the edge for finance and career outcomes, especially if you are thinking about high-level undergraduate recruiting, alumni access, and brand strength with employers. Its Mendoza College of Business is especially well known at the undergraduate level, and Notre Dame’s alumni network is one of the school’s biggest practical advantages for internships and full-time hiring. For finance in particular, that combination tends to translate into very strong placement and unusually loyal recruiting support.

One concrete differentiator is undergraduate business structure. At Notre Dame, business is a central, highly visible part of the university, and finance students benefit from a more focused undergraduate business environment. That usually means clearer pipelines into finance clubs, mentorship, and recruiter-facing programs. Boston University has solid business resources through Questrom, but BU is a much larger, more decentralized university experience, so the finance path can feel less concentrated.

Another difference is alumni culture. Notre Dame’s network has a real reputation for being responsive and invested in fellow graduates, which matters a lot in finance where referrals, informational interviews, and early internship leads can open doors. BU has a large and respected network too, especially in Boston, but Notre Dame’s alumni loyalty is often seen as more distinctive and more helpful in career-building situations.

Location is the strongest point in BU’s favor. Being in Boston gives students easier access during the school year to internships, networking events, and finance-related employers in a major business city. If you care a lot about urban internships while classes are in session, BU offers something Notre Dame cannot match in the same way.

For overall finance prestige and recruiting power from undergrad, Notre Dame is usually the school people would place ahead. BU is absolutely credible and can lead to strong outcomes, but Notre Dame more often stands out as the more established launchpad for finance.
