Boston University vs Brandeis for biology: which is better for an undergraduate biology major?

I’m trying to decide between Boston University and Brandeis for biology and keep going back and forth. I want a place where the biology program is strong and where undergrads actually have opportunities to get involved in research or labs early.

I’m not just looking at rankings, but at the overall fit for a student who wants to study biology seriously and maybe use it as a path toward pre-med or graduate school.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus access. Boston University gives you a much larger biology ecosystem, more course variety, a major urban medical hub, and extensive connections through its research and hospital network. Brandeis is smaller and often feels more personal, which can make it easier to build close relationships with professors and stand out when you are looking for research, advising, and recommendation letters.

For biology specifically, BU has the advantage in breadth. You will find more specialized upper-level biology options, more adjacent opportunities in neuroscience, public health, biomedical engineering, and a stronger sense of being plugged into a major research city. For a student interested in pre-med or grad school, that can translate into more labs, more shadowing-related possibilities nearby, and a wider academic menu.

Brandeis is very strong in the life sciences too, and one of its biggest selling points is undergraduate access. At a smaller research university, undergrads can have an easier time getting meaningful faculty attention earlier, and that matters a lot in biology. If you are the kind of student who thrives when professors know your name, classes are somewhat smaller, and research feels less competitive to break into, Brandeis can be a very appealing setup.

For pre-med, both schools can work well, but the student experience is different. BU’s environment can feel more intense and less personal, though the upside is a huge concentration of science and medical resources in Boston. Brandeis may offer a more contained, supportive academic atmosphere, but it does not match BU’s scale of nearby biomedical infrastructure.

My honest lean for an undergraduate biology major is BU if you want maximum scientific breadth, a big research environment, and access to Boston’s medical and biotech scene. I would choose Brandeis over BU only if you know you learn best in a smaller, more faculty-connected setting and you want the biology path to feel more intimate day to day.
