Boston University vs University of Rochester for finance: which is better?

I’m trying to decide between Boston University and the University of Rochester for finance, and I’m having trouble comparing them from a career standpoint.

I’m mainly interested in which school has the stronger finance reputation and better opportunities for internships, networking, and getting into a good job after graduation.

For finance, Boston University is usually the stronger choice from a career standpoint. BU has a more visible business brand through Questrom School of Business, direct access to Boston’s finance and corporate scene during the school year, and a larger city-based alumni network for internships and recruiting. If your priority is maximizing internship volume and proximity to employers, BU generally has the edge.

BU benefits a lot from location. Being in Boston makes it easier to intern part-time during the semester and network with firms in asset management, banking, consulting, fintech, and corporate finance. Questrom is also a well-known undergraduate business school, which matters when employers are scanning resumes quickly.

Rochester is still a strong option, especially if you want a more flexible academic environment and a somewhat more quantitative, economics-oriented approach. The Simon Business School is very respected at the graduate level, and Rochester undergrads can do well in finance, but the undergraduate finance pipeline is not usually seen as stronger than BU’s. The employer density around Rochester is also much lower than in Boston, so opportunities can require more intentional effort.

For internships and networking, BU is generally better positioned. For individual outcomes, motivated students at either school can land strong jobs, but BU tends to offer more built-in access simply because of geography, school visibility in business, and the size of the surrounding market.

If you are deciding strictly on finance reputation, internship access, and job placement convenience, BU is the safer pick. Rochester becomes more compelling if you strongly prefer its campus culture, academic flexibility, or if the cost difference is significant.
