Is UC Berkeley or NYU generally more expensive for undergraduates?

I’m trying to compare the overall cost of attending these two schools as a high school senior. I know one is a public university and the other is private, so I’m mostly wondering which one tends to be more expensive for an undergraduate once tuition and basic living costs are considered.

NYU is generally more expensive for undergraduates, especially when you compare tuition plus basic living costs. NYU is a private university with a very high sticker price, and its New York City housing and daily expenses are typically steep as well. UC Berkeley can also be costly, but for California residents its in-state tuition is much lower than NYU’s.

The biggest differentiator is tuition structure. Berkeley’s public-university pricing gives in-state students a major cost advantage, while NYU charges private-school tuition regardless of residency. For out-of-state Berkeley students, the gap narrows a lot, and Berkeley can end up closer to NYU than many families expect.

Living costs also matter, and both schools are in expensive urban areas. NYU students are paying Manhattan-level housing and everyday costs, which often pushes the total price even higher. Berkeley housing is not cheap either, but in most direct comparisons NYU still comes out ahead on total annual cost.

Financial aid can change the picture for an individual student. Berkeley can also be affordable for lower-income California residents through state and university support. But in broad, sticker-price terms, NYU tends to be the pricier option, while Berkeley is notably less expensive for in-state students and somewhat closer for out-of-state students.
