Is UC Berkeley or Northeastern worth it for undergraduates?

UC Berkeley is usually the better value for undergraduates, especially if the price difference is significant. Berkeley has a deeper overall academic reputation across more fields, very strong faculty access to major research and industry networks, and a degree that carries broad national and international recognition. For most students, those advantages are hard to beat on a value basis unless Northeastern is offering substantially better financial aid.

One concrete difference is the academic ecosystem. Berkeley is one of the most established public research universities in the country, and undergrads benefit from that scale in departments like engineering, computer science, economics, biology, political science, and many others. Even though large classes can be a downside, the range of labs, advanced coursework, and high-level peers often translates into stronger long-term academic and professional payoff.

Another key distinction is employer and graduate school perception. Berkeley has especially strong name recognition on the West Coast, in tech, in research, and internationally. That matters for internships, first jobs, and graduate admissions, particularly in fields where institutional reputation and faculty connections carry weight. Northeastern is well respected and has built a strong career-oriented brand.

The biggest area where Northeastern can make a real case is career structure. Its co-op model is a genuine advantage for students who want built-in, repeated work experience during college, and Boston offers access to many employers. If Northeastern is much cheaper for you, or if you strongly prefer a more professionally structured undergraduate path, that can absolutely outweigh Berkeley’s broader prestige. But on pure value for the money, Berkeley comes out ahead more often.
