How expensive is on-campus housing at UC Berkeley?
I'm currently a junior looking into UC Berkeley as one of my top choices. I've heard mixed things about the cost of living there, especially when it comes to on-campus housing. Can anyone break down how much I should expect to pay if I go with a typical dorm (not premium singles or anything)?
If you already go there or just applied, was the price a big shock? Are there big differences between the types of dorms at Cal? I'm worried about how much it'll end up costing compared to other schools I'm interested in and whether I should budget for extra expenses like meal plans or utilities.

On-campus housing at UC Berkeley is definitely on the expensive side, especially compared to many other public universities. For the 2024–2025 academic year, a typical double or triple in the residence halls usually runs between $17,000 and $19,000 for the year, including a standard meal plan. Clark Kerr (suite-style housing) is often a bit pricier, and singles or newly renovated spaces can push the cost above $21,000. Utilities like water, electricity, and internet are included, but laundry is extra at about $1.75 per wash and dry cycle.
All first-years living in the main residence halls are required to purchase a meal plan, which is bundled into the housing cost. The dining plan covers meals at the campus dining halls, with flexibility depending on how many swipes you choose each week.
From my own experience, I’ll say honestly that living on campus is extremely expensive. I don’t want to call it a rip-off, because I met some of my closest friends through living in the dorms, but it’s not something you want to do longer than you have to. After the first year, most students look into cheaper options. There are co-ops (which are significantly more affordable), university-owned apartments, or simply moving in with friends you meet during your first year. Some students also join sororities and fraternities that provide their own housing.
That said, I would highly recommend living on campus for your first year if you can. I’ve noticed that students who commute or skip the dorms tend to struggle more with feeling integrated, making friends, and even keeping up academically. Being in the residence halls gives you a sense of belonging and makes it easier to get involved, which can positively impact your GPA and your overall Berkeley experience.
So, in short: yes, on-campus housing is very expensive, but it’s also an important part of the first-year experience. After that, there are much cheaper and more flexible options, and most students move off-campus to save money.
