Williams or Wesleyan: which is generally considered more prestigious?

I’m trying to compare these two schools for my college list and keep seeing people describe both as highly respected liberal arts colleges. I know “prestige” can be subjective, but I’m wondering which name is generally viewed as stronger by students, alumni, and employers.

I’m mostly trying to understand how the two are perceived in a broad sense, not just based on rankings.

Williams is generally seen as having the stronger overall prestige. Among liberal arts colleges, it has an especially prominent reputation for academic strength, alumni influence, and national name recognition, and it is often treated as one of the very top schools in that category. Wesleyan is also highly respected, but in broad perception it tends to sit a notch below Williams.

One reason is institutional reputation across academia and selective employment pipelines. Williams has long been associated with unusually strong undergraduate teaching, and a powerful alumni network, especially in finance, consulting, academia, and graduate school placement. When people casually talk about the most elite liberal arts colleges, Williams is almost always near the front of that conversation.

Another difference is how each school is perceived culturally. Wesleyan has a distinctive identity that many people admire: more artsy, politically engaged, and creatively independent. That gives it real appeal and a strong brand of its own, but it does not usually translate into the same across-the-board prestige boost that Williams gets from its more traditional elite academic image.

Employers and graduate programs will view both as excellent schools, and outside higher ed circles many people may not sharply distinguish between them. But among students, alumni, counselors, and people familiar with selective colleges, Williams usually carries the slightly stronger name.
