Is Washington University in St. Louis or Notre Dame generally considered more prestigious for college admissions and reputation?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and keep seeing WashU and Notre Dame mentioned as top schools. Since both seem well respected, I’m confused about how people usually compare their prestige and overall reputation.

I’m not asking about fit or campus vibe here, just how they’re generally viewed by students, employers, and people in college admissions.

Notre Dame has the broader national prestige in the eyes of the general public, while Washington University in St. Louis is viewed as equally elite or even a bit stronger in some admissions and academic circles. Notre Dame’s name recognition is unusually wide because of its long national history, athletics presence, and very visible alumni network. WashU, by contrast, tends to carry a more academic, selective, and somewhat more niche reputation.

One big differentiator is public visibility. Notre Dame is one of the few private universities whose brand is instantly familiar far beyond higher education, so students, employers, and families across the country often recognize it immediately. That kind of household-name status matters when people talk loosely about prestige, even if they do not know much about specific programs.

Another difference is how each school is perceived inside college admissions and among people who follow elite universities closely. WashU is often grouped with highly selective research universities and has a reputation for strong academics, serious pre-med and pre-professional pathways, and affluent, high-achieving student cohorts. In those circles, its reputation can feel every bit as strong as Notre Dame’s, and sometimes more conventionally elite in tone.

Employer perception is also slightly different rather than clearly one-sided. Notre Dame’s alumni network is famously loyal and especially influential in business, finance, consulting, and certain national Catholic and civic networks. WashU is very well respected too, especially in medicine, research, and graduate-school-oriented environments, but its name often carries less immediate public recognition outside educated or admissions-savvy groups.
