How do Williams and Middlebury compare for study abroad opportunities?

I’m trying to decide between Williams and Middlebury and study abroad is a big factor for me. I know both are strong liberal arts schools, but I’m not sure how their study abroad options, support, and flexibility compare in practice.

I want to understand which school might make it easier to fit a study abroad experience into a four-year plan.

Middlebury has the edge for study abroad. It is especially strong if you care about language immersion, established overseas infrastructure, and having a lot of built-in options that are tightly connected to the college itself. Williams also supports studying abroad well, but Middlebury is more central to the idea.

One major difference is that Middlebury operates its own well-known Schools Abroad in multiple countries, especially for students studying languages. That gives it a more direct, institution-run pathway overseas, with programs designed around Middlebury’s academics and standards. Williams relies more on approved external programs, which can still be excellent, but the experience is less centered on Williams-created options.

Another practical advantage is academic fit. At Middlebury, study abroad tends to feel very integrated into the curriculum, particularly in language departments and internationally focused fields, so planning a semester away is often straightforward. Williams students do go abroad in solid numbers, but depending on the major, fitting an outside program into divisional and major requirements may take a bit more coordination.

Support also looks a little different. Middlebury has a long-standing identity tied to languages and international study, so advising around overseas programs is a real institutional strength. Williams offers strong advising too, and its small-college support can be very personal, but Middlebury’s global programming is simply deeper and more specialized.
