How does admissions difficulty compare between Williams College and UNC Chapel Hill?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Williams is a tiny, private liberal arts college with an extremely small incoming class, while UNC Chapel Hill is a large public university whose admissions difficulty changes a lot depending on whether you are in-state or out-of-state. That means Williams is intensely selective for nearly everyone, whereas UNC can range from very hard to much harder depending on residency.

Williams is typically harder to get into overall. Its applicant pool is self-selecting, nationally strong, and competing for very few seats, so there is very little room in the process. The academic bar is very high, and because the college is so small, strong grades and scores alone do not make someone close to safe.

UNC Chapel Hill is also very competitive, but the comparison depends heavily on where you live. For North Carolina residents, UNC is still selective, but it is more accessible than Williams for a well-qualified applicant because the university is designed in part to serve the state. For out-of-state applicants, UNC becomes much tougher and can feel closer to top private-school territory, though Williams is still usually the more difficult admit in a head-to-head sense.

A simple way to think about it is this: Williams is a reach for almost everyone, including many exceptional students. UNC is also a reach for many applicants, but for in-state students it is often a more realistic reach than Williams. Williams is the harder school to enter overall, while UNC’s difficulty is more variable and especially sharp for out-of-state applicants.
