Which is better for Boston internships: Villanova or Northeastern?

I’m trying to choose between Villanova and Northeastern, and one thing that matters a lot to me is getting internship opportunities in Boston. I know Northeastern is in Boston, but Villanova has a strong reputation too, so I’m trying to understand which school would actually be better for building internship connections there.

The biggest practical tradeoff is proximity versus portability: Northeastern puts you in Boston every day, which makes semester-time internships, networking, and employer events much easier, while Villanova gives you a respected degree and alumni network but from outside the city and outside the Boston market. For Boston internships specifically, Northeastern has the clearer edge because its co-op model is built around employer relationships and because students can work during the academic year without the extra hurdle of distance. Being in Boston also means easier access to info sessions, part-time roles, coffee chats, and last-minute opportunities that often matter more than school reputation alone.

Northeastern’s location is not just a nice bonus here. It changes how often you can engage with employers and how early you can start. Boston companies are used to recruiting Northeastern students for co-ops and internships, and the university has long-standing ties with employers across business, tech, healthcare, nonprofits, and media in the city. That built-in rhythm of school-to-employer connection is hard to replicate from Villanova.

Villanova can still place students into Boston internships, especially through alumni outreach, summer roles, and more structured recruiting pipelines. Its name carries weight, particularly in business circles, and a motivated student could absolutely build Boston connections from there. But it usually takes more intentional effort because you are not embedded in the same local ecosystem during the school year, and many opportunities become less convenient when travel or relocation is involved.

If your question is narrowly about building internship connections in Boston, Northeastern is the better pick. Villanova is a strong school, but Northeastern gives you the city, the employer access, and the co-op structure all at once, which is a real advantage when Boston itself is part of your goal.
