Which is better for commuting students, Villanova or Rutgers?
I'm a high school senior trying to decide between Villanova and Rutgers, and commuting is a big factor for me. I would probably be traveling from home most days, so I'm mostly trying to figure out which school is a better fit for students who do not live on campus.
I'm interested in things like how manageable the commute feels, how much support commuter students get, and whether one school is generally easier to handle if you're not living there.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Rutgers is much more built to function for students who do not live on campus, while Villanova has a more residential feel that can make commuting workable but less central to campus life. Rutgers has a large commuter population, more infrastructure designed around students coming and going, and a campus culture where not living in dorms is very common. Villanova does support commuters, but the student experience is more centered on living nearby or on campus, especially socially.
For day-to-day logistics, Rutgers is usually easier to handle as a commuter. A lot depends on which Rutgers campus and your major, since New Brunswick in particular is spread across multiple campuses and can involve buses, but the university is used to students navigating that system from home.
Villanova is physically more compact, which helps, and its Main Line location can be convenient if you are coming from nearby suburbs or using regional rail. But because the school is smaller and more residential, commuters can sometimes need to be more intentional about staying on campus between classes, joining activities, and building a routine that keeps them connected. At a place like Villanova, the challenge is often less about getting there and more about feeling fully plugged into campus life once you arrive.
If commuting is a major factor in your decision, Rutgers has the edge. It is simply more accustomed to serving commuter students at scale, and that usually translates into a smoother, more natural experience for someone traveling from home most days. Villanova can still work well if the route is especially easy for you and you prefer a smaller private-school environment, but on commuting alone, Rutgers is the more practical choice.
