Which has a better campus location, Villanova or Rutgers?

I’m trying to compare these two schools and campus location is one of the biggest things for me. I care a lot about how easy it is to get to nearby restaurants, stores, and things to do, as well as whether the campus feels more suburban or more city-like.

I know both schools have very different settings, so I’m mainly trying to figure out which one feels better located overall for a student.

Rutgers has the better campus location if easy access to restaurants, stores, transit, and a more active surrounding area matters most. Its New Brunswick setting is much more city-like than Villanova’s Main Line suburb, and students can walk to downtown food spots, shops, bars, theaters, and the train station.

Rutgers benefits from being woven into New Brunswick rather than sitting apart from it. Even though the campus is spread across several sections and buses are part of daily life, there is much more immediately around you once you leave campus. That makes everyday errands and spontaneous plans easier in a way Villanova usually does not match.

Villanova’s location is attractive in a different way because it is cleaner, quieter, and more residential. The Main Line has nice towns, good restaurants, and SEPTA access into Philadelphia, but the immediate area around campus feels more suburban and less full of student life right outside the gates. In practice, students often need a short train ride, drive, or planned outing to get the same level of activity that Rutgers students find more directly nearby.

The biggest tradeoff is atmosphere. Villanova offers a polished suburban campus with quick access to Philly, while Rutgers gives you a busier, less contained setting with more happening in the immediate area. For the specific things you listed, especially walkable off-campus options and a city-adjacent feel, Rutgers comes out ahead.
