What is the typical length for a college essay?
I'm just starting to look into writing my college essays (like the Common App personal statement) and I'm a little confused about how long they're supposed to be. I know there's a word count limit for some applications, but is there also an expected minimum? Is it bad to go a lot under the limit as long as it answers the prompt?
If anyone could share how long their essays ended up being or what admissions officers prefer, that would be super helpful. I keep seeing different recommendations online and just want to make sure I'm on track.

For the Common App personal statement, the word count limit is 650 words, and the recommended minimum is 250 words. Most strong essays tend to fall in the 550 to 650 word range. Admissions officers expect you to use as much of the space as you need—ideally, getting closer to the upper end if you have a good story to tell.
While you technically can submit a much shorter essay if it fully answers the prompt, most effective essays use the full opportunity to reveal more about who you are, your values, and what matters to you. Consistently, essays that are much under 500 words can seem underdeveloped or rushed, leading reviewers to wonder if you fully reflected on your response.
As an example, one student wrote 635 words about the world inside her grandmother’s antique shop, exploring memories, family history, and a lesson she learned about persistence. She didn’t fill every line with irrelevant details, but she used the room to flesh out her experience and its impact.
If you’re just starting, aim to draft your essay without focusing too much on length. Once your ideas are down, edit for clarity and depth, then check your word count. Trim any repetition or filler, and make sure every part of your essay contributes something meaningful—if your draft is under 400 words, consider whether you’re missing an important detail or a deeper reflection. On the flip side, if you’re consistently at the word limit, focus on the quality of your writing rather than squeezing in extra content.
In short, there isn’t a fixed 'perfect' word count, but using most of the space provided typically lets you share a fuller, more compelling story. 500 to 650 words is a solid guideline to follow unless the prompt states otherwise.
