Is Notre Dame or the University of Michigan better for computer science?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out where I’d be a better fit for computer science. Both schools seem strong overall, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one has the better CS program and reputation for students who want internships or jobs after graduation.

I know fit matters too, but I’m mainly looking for a simple comparison of the two schools for CS.

For computer science specifically, Michigan has the stronger overall reputation and a larger, more established CS ecosystem. Notre Dame can still be a very good option, but if your question is mainly about CS strength, breadth, and industry presence, Michigan is usually the one people recognize first.

Michigan tends to fit the student who wants a big, high-powered CS environment with lots of specialization. You will find more upper-level electives, more research labs, more student project teams, and a larger peer community focused on software, AI, systems, robotics, and related areas.

Notre Dame makes more sense for the student who wants a smaller, more personal undergraduate experience and likes the idea of strong teaching in a close-knit campus community. You may get somewhat easier access to professors and a more intimate academic setting, which some students prefer. Its CS outcomes can still be solid, especially for motivated students, but the program does not have the same national weight or breadth as Michigan’s.

For a student focused on maximizing options in CS, especially for internships, software engineering recruiting, and name recognition in the field, Michigan has the clearer edge. For a student who cares a lot about smaller community, strong overall undergraduate attention, and the broader Notre Dame campus culture, Notre Dame may still be the more appealing place to spend four years.
