Is Maryland or Virginia better for studying business in college?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and I keep seeing schools in both Maryland and Virginia that have business programs. I’m not sure which state is generally a better fit for a business major in terms of internships, networking, and career opportunities after graduation.

I want to compare them at a high level before I get too deep into specific schools.

At a high level, Virginia tends to offer a stronger overall environment for a business major, especially if you care about recruiting pipelines, national employer visibility, and access to finance, consulting, and government-adjacent business work. Schools like UVA’s McIntire School of Commerce and William & Mary have especially strong reputations, and the Northern Virginia corridor connects students to a huge concentration of employers. Maryland is still a very solid option, particularly if you want proximity to Washington, DC and are interested in business tied to government, policy, tech, or public sector contracting.

Virginia makes the most sense for a student who wants a more established traditional business pipeline. If you are drawn to consulting, finance, corporate strategy, or a broad national alumni network, Virginia’s top business programs usually carry more weight and have especially strong recruiting ties. Northern Virginia also gives you access to major companies, startups, federal contractors, and a dense professional network, which can matter a lot for internships during the school year.

Maryland fits well for a student who wants business opportunities tied closely to DC, especially in areas like information systems, supply chain, marketing analytics, public sector consulting, and business roles connected to government agencies or contractors. The University of Maryland’s Smith School is well regarded and benefits from being near both DC and a growing tech corridor. That location can be especially useful if you want internships that blend business with policy, data, cybersecurity, or federal-facing industries.

If you are comparing the states rather than one school versus another, Virginia has the edge on business prestige and classic recruiting strength. Maryland can be just as appealing for someone who wants a practical, location-driven path with easy access to DC-area internships and careers.
