Maryland vs Tulane for business: which is better for internships and recruiting?

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between the University of Maryland and Tulane for business. I like both schools overall, but I’m mainly thinking about how each one helps with internships, networking, and getting a first job after college.

I’m not looking for a ranking in general, just which school tends to be stronger for business opportunities and recruiting.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and employer access versus a smaller, more personal network. Maryland tends to offer broader business recruiting because of its size, the Smith School’s reach, and its location near Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and major East Coast employers. Tulane offers strong access too, but it is more relationship-driven and often especially tied to New Orleans, the Gulf South, and alumni-heavy pipelines rather than the same breadth of on-campus recruiting.

For internships during the school year, Maryland has a real edge. Being in College Park makes it much easier to reach D.C.-area firms, government-related consulting and finance roles, corporate offices, and internships you can do part time during the semester.

Tulane can be very effective for students who actively network early. Its alumni community is known for being loyal and responsive, and the school places well in certain business paths, especially when students use connections in New Orleans, Houston, Atlanta, and sometimes New York. But compared with Maryland, the recruiting structure is usually less about sheer employer volume and more about who you meet, how early you start, and how intentionally you use the alumni base.

For a first job, Maryland is usually the safer bet if your priority is maximum internship volume and more formal recruiting channels. Tulane can absolutely lead to strong outcomes, but it often rewards students who are more self-directed and comfortable building opportunities through networking rather than relying on a larger on-campus recruiting machine.

So if the question is strictly internships and recruiting in business, Maryland has the stronger overall platform. Tulane is attractive if you value a smaller environment and think you will make exceptional use of alumni connections, but Maryland is more likely to give you consistent access to employers across more business fields.
