Is the University of Maryland or Villanova better for business?

I’m trying to choose between Maryland and Villanova for undergrad business and keep seeing both recommended. I know they have different vibes and costs, but I’m mainly trying to understand which one has the stronger business program overall for a student who wants good career opportunities after graduation.

For business alone, both are respected, but they serve somewhat different students. Villanova tends to appeal more to someone who wants a smaller, more structured business-school experience with strong placement into finance, accounting, and East Coast corporate roles. Maryland is often a better match for someone who wants a larger university environment, broader academic options, and especially strong access to internships tied to the D.C. area, consulting, tech, and government-adjacent business work.

If you are drawn to a tight-knit undergraduate business community, Villanova School of Business has a strong reputation and is known for sending students into accounting, finance, and big-name employers, especially in the Northeast. The class experience is usually more personal, and the alumni network can feel very active and accessible. For a student who wants a polished pre-professional environment and likes the idea of being surrounded by many other business-focused students from day one, Villanova has a real advantage.

Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is compelling for a different kind of student. It benefits from being part of a major public research university near Washington, D.C., which creates useful internship access during the school year, not just in the summer. That can matter a lot for career opportunities in consulting, marketing, information systems, supply chain, and roles connected to policy, analytics, or large organizations. Maryland also gives you more scale, more campus energy, and more flexibility if your interests shift across business and other fields.

If cost is meaningfully lower at Maryland, that would be hard to ignore, because Smith is well regarded and can absolutely lead to strong outcomes. If the prices are close and you know you want a more intimate, business-centered undergraduate experience, Villanova may feel more intentionally built for that path.
