Which is better for undergraduate research opportunities: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or UC Davis?
I’m trying to decide between these two schools and research access is a big factor for me. I want a place where undergrads can realistically get involved in labs, projects, or faculty research fairly early.
I know both are strong schools, but I’m mainly trying to understand which one tends to offer more opportunities for students like me.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus accessibility. UIUC has enormous research volume and especially deep opportunities in engineering, computer science, physics, and other technical fields, but that size can make some popular labs feel more competitive at first. UC Davis also has major research activity, and many students find its undergraduate research culture a bit more approachable early on, especially in biology, agriculture, environmental science, animal science, and health-related areas.
At UIUC, the upside is sheer breadth. There are many labs, research centers, and funded projects, and faculty are doing work at a very high level across STEM and beyond. If your interests lean toward engineering, data science, materials, chemistry, or math-heavy fields, UIUC often gives you more total doors to knock on, even if getting into the most sought-after groups can take persistence.
At UC Davis, research is woven strongly into life sciences and applied science in a very visible way. The campus is known for hands-on work tied to agriculture, ecology, veterinary medicine, food science, genetics, and public health, and undergrads often connect with labs through department programs, coursework, and faculty outreach.
A lot depends on your field. For engineering and CS, I would lean UIUC because the research ecosystem is so large and nationally prominent.
So if the question is not prestige but realistic undergraduate access, UC Davis has a slight edge in approachability for many students. If the question is where the ceiling is highest, especially in technical and engineering-heavy research, UIUC stands out more.
