Is University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Notre Dame better for accounting?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and accounting is the major I’m most interested in. I know both have strong reputations, but I’m not sure which one is generally considered better for accounting in terms of academics, recruiting, and preparing for a career in the field.

I want to compare them before I apply, since I’m trying to narrow down my list of schools.

For accounting specifically, UIUC is more often the school people point to first. Its Gies College of Business has a long-established national reputation in accounting, a very deep pipeline into public accounting and corporate roles, and strong recruiting from major firms because of the size and visibility of the program. Notre Dame is also excellent, but it tends to be discussed more as a broadly elite business university than as the place most singularly identified with accounting.

UIUC makes the most sense for a student who wants a big, highly developed accounting ecosystem. You would be looking at a large business school with a lot of course options, a bigger accounting peer group, and a very established presence with Big Four and other employers. If you think you may want the classic accounting path, especially public accounting, audit, tax, advisory, or eventually CPA-oriented preparation, UIUC has a particularly strong reputation there.

Notre Dame fits the student who wants accounting within a smaller, more relationship-driven undergraduate environment. The Mendoza College of Business is very well regarded, and Notre Dame’s alumni network is famously strong and loyal. For someone who values close-knit campus culture, strong mentorship, and the broader Notre Dame brand across business fields, it can be a very compelling option even if accounting is not the one area where people most often place it ahead of UIUC.

In recruiting terms, both schools can open doors, but UIUC usually has the edge in accounting-specific depth, while Notre Dame brings a powerful overall brand and network that can travel well across finance, consulting, and business leadership roles too. If your question is strictly which school is more recognized for accounting itself, UIUC is the clearer answer. If you want accounting plus a smaller private-school experience and the Notre Dame network, Notre Dame remains a very strong choice.
