Is UC Irvine or University of San Francisco better for finance careers?

I’m trying to decide between UC Irvine and the University of San Francisco for undergrad, and I’m interested in working in finance after college.

I know both schools are in California, but I’m not sure which one has a stronger reputation, recruiting, or alumni network for finance careers.

For finance, UC Irvine is usually the safer bet if you want a larger public university with broader name recognition, stronger overall recruiting infrastructure, and a bigger alumni base. It has the advantage of UC branding, an established business school through the Paul Merage School of Business, and access to Orange County and Los Angeles employers in corporate finance, accounting, consulting, and related business roles.

UC Irvine fits students who want a more traditional campus experience and the scale of a major research university. You are more likely to find a wider range of finance-adjacent opportunities, including student organizations, internships during the school year, and alumni across many industries. If your idea of finance includes corporate finance, FP&A, commercial banking, real estate, or eventually moving into consulting or business analytics, Irvine lines up well.

USF makes more sense for a student who wants a smaller private-school environment and direct access to San Francisco during the academic year. Its location can be genuinely useful for networking, especially for wealth management, fintech, boutique firms, and Bay Area business roles where being nearby matters. The school can work well for a proactive student who will take advantage of internships, coffee chats, and city-based connections early.

Where USF is a bit less compelling is pure brand strength in finance compared with a UC campus like Irvine. It does not typically carry the same broad reputation with employers nationwide, and for more competitive finance recruiting, you may need to hustle harder and rely more on personal networking.

If you are undecided within finance and want the stronger overall platform, UC Irvine is the clearer choice. If you are very self-directed, like smaller classes, and specifically want to build Bay Area connections while in school, USF has a more location-driven appeal.
