Which Texas colleges don't require an admissions essay?

I'm starting to narrow down my college list and I realized that writing all these essays is kind of overwhelming. I'd like to know if there are any colleges in Texas that don't require an essay for their application.

If anyone has applied recently and can share their experience, I'd really appreciate it. I'm looking at mainly public universities, but I'd consider any suggestions. Also, does no essay mean they don't require any kind of short answer at all, or just a traditional long essay?

If you have a link to the official application info, that's a plus. Thanks in advance!

There are several Texas colleges—especially among the public universities—that don’t require a traditional admissions essay for many applicants, though policies can change year to year. For example, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Texas State University, Angelo State University, Sam Houston State University, and some University of Houston campuses have all, at times, offered essay-optional admission, particularly for students who meet certain test score or class rank criteria.

At Texas State University, for instance, submitting an essay is optional for most freshman applicants, unless you fall below the automatic admission requirements. You can check their official admissions website here: https://www.admissions.txstate.edu/future-students/freshman/admission-process.html. Likewise, University of Houston main campus usually requires a short essay (around 300 words), but their downtown or Clear Lake campuses may allow you to skip it if your academic profile is strong enough. Always double-check the admissions page before finalizing your application, since the rules and requirements may have changed since the last cycle.

In most cases, 'no essay required' usually means no long personal statement, but you might still face short-answer questions (like describing extracurricular activities or explaining gaps in education). Some schools will ask for an essay only if you don’t meet certain automatic admission requirements (such as being in the top 10% of your high school class or hitting a specific SAT/ACT score).

If you’re looking for the lowest-effort options, make a list of the schools you’re interested in, then check their admissions requirements page for specifics about essays and short answer prompts. Many applicants find this saves them a lot of time during application season.

From people who’ve gone through the process recently: several reported that applying to Sam Houston State or Texas A&M Corpus Christi was the fastest because the essays really were optional and, if skipped, did not affect admission chances for students who qualified automatically. Also, some schools only require essays for scholarship consideration, not for general admission.

If you need help searching specific colleges, send a few names and I can help you check their requirements. Good luck narrowing down your list and saving some essay-writing energy!
