In certain circles, especially among educators and students who know selective liberal arts colleges well, Middlebury can be seen as exceptionally strong even if its name is less universally recognized.

Among other students, Harvard is usually the school that carries more instant prestige in casual conversation. Middlebury tends to get more of a response like “that’s a really good school” from people who know colleges well, rather than the immediate global-name reaction Harvard gets.
