Middlebury tends to have the edge in old-school academic prestige, especially among people familiar with highly selective liberal arts colleges. Its reputation is tied to rigorous undergraduate teaching, a very intentional residential academic culture, and unusually strong programs like environmental studies and language study, including the well-known language schools connected to the institution.

Villanova’s reputation is strong too, but it is built somewhat differently.
